Lithium Coin or Button Cells (sizes, estimate duration, main use)

watch battery or button cell is a small single cell battery shaped as a squat cylinder typically 5 to 25 mm in diameter and 1 to 6 mm high—like a button on a garment, hence the name. A metal can form the bottom body and positive terminal of the cell. An insulated top cap is a negative terminal.

Button cells are used to power small portable electronic devices such as wrist watches, pocket calculators, artificial cardiac pacemakers, implantable cardiac defibrillators, automobile keyless entry transmitters, and hearing aids. Wider variants are usually called coin cells. Devices using button cells are usually designed around a cell giving a long service life, typically well over a year in continuous use in a wristwatch. Most button cells have low self-discharge and hold their charge for a long time if not used. Higher-power devices such as hearing aids, where high capacity is important and low self-discharge less so as the cell will usually be used up before it has time to discharge, may use zinc-air cells which have a much higher capacity for a given size but dry out over a few weeks even if not used.

Button cells are single cells, usually disposable primary cells. Common anode materials are zinc or lithium. Common cathode materials are manganese dioxide, silver oxide, carbon monofluoride, cupric oxide or oxygen from the air. Mercuric Oxide button cells were formerly common, but are no longer available due to the toxicity and environmental effect of mercury.

Cells of different chemical composition made in the same size are mechanically interchangeable. However, the composition can affect service life and voltage stability. Using the wrong cell may lead to short life or improper operation (for example, light metering on a camera requires a stable voltage, and silver cells are usually specified). Sometimes different cells of the same type and size and specified capacity in milliampere-hours (mAh) are optimized for different loads by using different electrolytes, so that one may have longer service life than the other if supplying a relatively high current.

Button cells are very dangerous for small children. Button cells that are swallowed can cause severe internal burns and significant injury or death.

Silver Oxide Batteries (specifications & common use)

In a silver oxide battery, silver oxide is used as the cathode and zinc as the anode. An alkaline electrolyte, usually sodium hydroxide or potassium hydroxide, is included in the chemistry, as well. Chemical reactions inside the battery reduce the silver content from Ag(I) to AG, and oxidize the zinc from Zn to Zn(II). Spent silver oxide batteries are sometimes recycled for their precious metals (silver), but the quantity of silver present in most batteries of this type is so small that this is generally impractical.

In comparison to other batteries, silver oxide batteries have flatter discharge curves than standard alkalines, as well as higher open circuit potential than mercury batteries. Prior to the development of lithium-ion technology, silver oxide batteries had the highest energy density of any battery chemistry. Still, silver oxide batteries provide up to 40 percent greater run time than lithium-ion batteries. Silver oxides’ water-based chemistry also prevents thermal runaway and flammability, potential problems that lithium-ions have been known to experience.

  • Cell Voltage: The open circuit voltage of the silver cell is 1.6 V. Typical median operating voltage is 1.5 to 1.2 V.
  • Capacity: 14 mAh to 180 mAh.
  • Energy by Weight: 60 Wh/lb. (130 Wh/kg)
  • Energy by Volume: 8.2 Wh/cubic inch (500 Wh/l)
  • Discharge Characteristics : (recommended drain 620W to 39W )
  • Shelf Life: Charge retention is over 84% after two years of storage at 70°F (21°C)
  • Temperature Range: -20° C to +60° C
  • Sizes: The silver cell is manufactured in button cell configurations.
  • Applications: Hearing aids, watches, photographic equipment and special electronics requiring small, high capacity batteries

Hearing Aid Batteries

Hearing Aid Battery types and use

What are the common battery sizes?
Hearing aid batteries come in 4 common sizes. They are 10 O, 13 O, 312 O and 675 O/O. To identify the size, most manufacturers use an industry standard color code on their zinc air tabs and packaging. Yellow for Size 10, Brown for Size 312, Orange for Size 13 and Blue/ Green for Size 675.

How long will my batteries last?
Battery life is determined by the type and amplification of your hearing aid as well as the hours you wear your hearing aid. Your hearing care professional can tell you the battery life you can expect.

How should I store my batteries?
You should store your hearing aid batteries at room temperature. Avoid storing your batteries in hot places since heat will shorten the life of the batteries. Refrigeration is also not recommended. Batteries should not be carried loose in your pocket or purse. If a battery inadvertently comes into contact with a metal object such as coins or keys the battery may discharge, leak or in rare incidences even rupture. To prevent this from occurring keep unused batteries in the original packaging or in a battery holder.
Batteries that have been fully discharged can be thrown in your regular trash. Store and discard batteries in places that cannot be reached by infants or children. If a battery is swallowed, see a doctor immediately.

Why is there a tab on my ZINC AIR battery?
A zinc air battery uses air outside the battery as a source of power. The factory applied tab seals the air holes in the battery and ensures freshness until you are ready to use the battery. Do not remove the tab until you are ready to use the battery. To activate the battery, you simply remove the tab. After removing the tab, wait about three to five minutes prior to inserting the battery into your hearing aid. This allows sufficient time for the air to enter and activate the ingredients. Replacing the tab when the battery is not in use will NOT extend the battery life.

Rechargeable

Rechargeable Batteries

rechargeable batterystorage batterysecondary cell, or accumulator is a type of electrical battery which can be charged, discharged into a load, and recharged many times, as opposed to a disposable or primary battery, which is supplied fully charged and discarded after use. It is composed of one or more electrochemical cells. The term "accumulator" is used as it accumulates and stores energy. through a reversible electrochemical reaction. Rechargeable batteries are produced in many different shapes and sizes, ranging from button cells to megawatt systems connected to stabilize an electrical distribution network. Several different combinations of electrode materials and electrolytes are used, including lead-acid, nickel-cadmium (NiCd), nickel-metal hydride (NiMH),  lithium-ion(Li-ion), and lithium-ion polymer (Li-ion polymer).

Rechargeable batteries typically initially cost more than disposable batteries, but have a much lower total cost of ownership and environmental impact, as they can be recharged inexpensively many times before they need replacing. Some rechargeable battery types are available in the same sizes and voltages as the disposable type and can be used interchangeably with them. For more information click on our "Rechargeable Tab" and take a look at our available and fully stock of batteries.
